The Department of Environmental Science

The selected candidate will be affiliated with the Section of Environmental Microbiology. The section has expertise on a number of specific areas within microbial ecology: Arctic microbiology, environmental risk analysis of microorganisms and sustainable green biotechnology; risk assessment of GMOs: human exposure to microorganisms in the environment; using microbes as bioindicators for environmental conditions (e.g. soil quality); microbial degradation of pollutants and gene exchange among microorganisms; ecology of viruses associated with fungi and protists; eDNA approaches to detect non-indigenous species in the environment and environmental risk analyses. The research activities involve a number of methods for measuring different parameters at the level of individual species – for example, the presence and activity of bacteria, fungi and protists in the environment (soil, water, air and food) and their interactions between species and plants. Similarly, different forms of diversity (genetic and functional) are measured in entire microbial populations and used as indicators for habitat quality parameters. The candidate will work in close collaboration with other sections at the Department concerned with topics like emission inventories, atmosphere quality measurements (including bioaerosols), environmental metabolomics, and environmental social science. Expertise within the Section of Environmental Microbiology includes:

  • Microbial ecology of the Greenlandic cryosphere
  • Interactions of microorganisms in agricultural soil ecosystems
  • Microbial degradation of organic micropollutants in the environment
  • Microbial activity in industrial settings – including wastewater treatment, biogas production and water-purification units
  • Cold-enzyme technology including cultivation of Greenlandic microorganisms and screening for valuable enzyme producers
  • Aero-microbiology
  • Environmental DNA for species detection and impact analysis on invertebrates, fish and plants
  • Sequencing and Bioinformatics Center comprising several sequencing platforms and servers for DNA and RNA sequencing with great focus on totalRNA metatranscriptomics

Description of the position:
The selected candidate in molecular microbial ecology is expected to

  • Conduct and publish international recognized research within molecular microbial ecology
  • Contribute to developing and enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration both within the department and university, as well as with national and international partners
  • Actively contribute to the project portfolio at the Department by taking part in applications for externally funded research and advisory projects
  • Contribute to the development of new courses in environmental science
  • Consolidate own externally funded research within the research areas of the section
  • Supervise graduate (Master and PhD level) students in thesis research projects

Your profile
The ideal candidate has experience within two or more of the following research fields:

  • Molecular microbial ecology of soil, water or cryoenvironment
  • eDNA methodology (e.g. qPCR, metabarcoding) for detection of organisms in the environment; namely eukaryote non-indigenous species, as well as protists and microfauna
  • Bioinformatics for treating sequencing data, on community and single species level
  • Microbial interactions with plants, micro- and macrofauna and protists

Qualifications:

  • A proven publication record in international peer-reviewed ISI journals
  • A documented history of successful external research funding for students and own salary
  • Experience with international collaboration
  • Experience with consultancy/advisory projects will be advantageous
  • A demonstrated research leadership and ability to define and manage research projects
  • A demonstrated ability of successful supervising of PhD, graduate and undergraduate students. A proof of pedagogic training (pædagogikum) will be advantageous.

The candidate is expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary academic environment. In addition, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate the potential to be a strong role model for values of equality, diversity and inclusion. The position requires a highly motivated researcher who is comfortable with teamwork and believes in creating an attractive work/life balance in her/his research group.

Applicants applying for the Associated Professor position should hold scientific qualifications at PhD graduate level and have at least 2-3 years’ experience on post-graduate research. The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate publication activity independent of supervisors, must show evidence of an emerging productive publication record, and active participation in applying for external research funding. Participation in national and international networks of researchers is preferable.

The place of work will be at Aarhus University, Frederiksborgvej 399, 4000 Roskilde, Denmark, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments. Technical Sciences Tenure Track

Formalities and salary range

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
