The Department of Political Science, Aarhus University in Denmark invites applications for one assistant professorship in connection with the research project “The role of Voting Advice Applications in Representative Democracy”. The position is located at the Department of Political Science, Aarhus University. Successful candidates are expected to start by January 1, 2024, but can be flexible subject to mutual agreement.
The employment is a fixed-term appointment which will terminate on June 30, 2027.
The role of Voting Advice Applications in Representative democracy
The project investigates whether and how Voting Advice Applications (VAAs) shape voting behavior in representative democracies. Specifically, it focuses on three overarching research questions: 1) Who (if any) are influenced by VAA advice? 2) Do those who are affected become more likely to vote for representatives who match their political preferences? 3) Which types of VAAs have these effects? To answer these questions, the project uses data from an original VAA that is hosted on the news organization Jyllands-Posten’s website.
The position also offers opportunities to develop new research questions that are related to the project’s overarching goals.
The research project is financed by the Danish Research Council for the period January 2023 to June 2027. The senior researcher is associate professor Mathias Wessel Tromborg.
The assistant professor will be involved in all aspects of the project, and is expected to engage in the investigation of how society can increase citizen engagement with, and knowledge of, their political system. Applicants are expected to hold (or be close to completing) a PhD in political science or a related social science field. In addition to interest in conducting independent and collaborative research within the focus areas of the project, applicants must demonstrate the ability to conduct quantitative and causal research within the field of political behavior. Proficiency in Danish is preferable.

The Department of Political Science is among Europe’s highest ranking Political Science departments. It is large, among other things because it includes a large Public Administration section. With around 130 academic staff members and 40 PhD students, we offer a lively and ambitious research and teaching environment. The appointment is made in accordance with the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities as well as the circular on the Collective Agreement for Academics Employed by the State (in Danish).
